BLACK BOATS
Dead to Rights was written, recorded and produced by Black Boats at Shabby Roads Studios in Atlanta from 2017 thru 2019. The music contained in the recording is the product of improvisational sessions cherry picked and then honed to a finished product; some tracks are completely live recordings; others are live recordings with overdubs, and some are tracked efforts.
Black Boats is Corey Pallon (drums), Mike Perkins (bass) and Chris Tuccillo (guitar). This album wouldn’t have been made if Corey had not subjected himself to abject poverty. |
DEAD TO RIGHTS: A Detective Lazlo Story
Digital Why a Concept record?
The concept really began as a running joke about a guy named Laszlo, which was riffed off of Lalo Schiffern. We’re all big fans of his tunes and early on in our sessions we had a song idea that reminded us of his work. Someone said “It sounds like a Lazlo Schiffrin riff” and Corey piped up that his proper name was Lalo. It just went from there, with Mike and Chris deliberately saying Lazlo instead of Lalo, joking about this Lazlo guy and then every other song idea we came up with got the moniker of Lazlo’s Bar, or Lazlo’s neighborhood, Lazlo’s Lady. It just kind of sprawled from there. Also, we wrote all of these songs and they didn’t have really concrete lyrics or vocal melodies, so after there were 4 or so near finished pieces with no vocals the idea of a soundtrack was more and more appealing and of course it became the story of Lazlo. We decided to make him a cop or detective and then it was a lot of fun making a cover. And when you can’t squeeze another dime out of the place, when you borrow make another dollar. What do you do? You light a match. |
